Reflection: The Mirror of Aligned Leadership and Life
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who in the land is fairest of them all?"
This iconic line from Snow White is often viewed as a symbol of vanity. But for those of us on a path of aligned leadership and purposeful living, it offers a deeper prompt:
When you look into the mirror, does your reflection reflect who you really are—and who you’re becoming?
From Routine to Ritual: The Power of Reflection
Just recently, I was scrolling through old files when I came across journal entries from my military days as a senior enlisted leader. Those notes reminded me of a simple, powerful habit I used to practice: early morning reflection.
Before physical training, I’d pause—sometimes just mentally, sometimes with pen to paper—and scan my week for meaning. What had I learned? What emotions had surfaced? Where had I led well, and where was I being invited to grow?
It wasn’t a natural skill. I had to build it with intention. And though I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be now, I still return to journaling regularly. It’s not just about reviewing the past—it’s about staying rooted in purpose, presence, and perspective.
Holistic Reflection Is Inner Leadership
In the world of holistic life, leadership, and career coaching, reflection isn’t a passive activity—it’s a leadership discipline. It allows you to:
Reconnect with your core values
Process your experiences emotionally, mentally, and spiritually
Recognize patterns in behavior, relationships, and decisions
Realign with your vision and purpose
Leadership isn’t something you “do.” It’s who you are. And who you are is shaped by the choices you make in both small moments and significant ones.
When you reflect regularly, you give yourself the gift of awareness. You begin to notice how your actions, mindset, and emotions impact not only your outcomes—but your influence on others.
Avoiding the Snow White Trap
In the original Grimm Brothers version of Snow White, the Queen tried to eliminate her rival not once, but four times. She changed disguises. She used new tricks. But her goal was always the same: to remain "the fairest of them all."
Snow White, too, kept falling for the same traps, despite warnings. She didn’t yet recognize the patterns repeating in her life.
Sound familiar?
We all have our own versions of the Queen and Snow White within us—our ego, our blind spots, our inner critic, our recurring mistakes.
Reflection helps you see those patterns before they sabotage your growth. It helps you pause, listen, and ask:
Why does this keep happening?
What am I not seeing?
Where am I being invited to respond differently?
Reflection Is a Leadership Responsibility
When you choose to reflect, you are choosing self-leadership. You’re declaring:
“I am willing to learn from my life—not just live it.”
That is the difference between reactive leadership and aligned leadership.
So the next time you catch your reflection in the mirror, take a moment.
Does it reflect the leader you want to be?
Does it show the version of yourself that’s living with integrity and intention?
Or is it nudging you to shift, grow, or recalibrate?
